It happened. Gavin Newsom and California Democrats have been working overtime to make today’s news possible, and they finally did it. Once again, California has the HIGHEST unemployment rate in the nation, ticking up to 5.3%. The nation’s lowest unemployment rate in Republican-led North Dakota is much less than half that of California’s, sitting at 2%. In fact, California’s unemployment rate is more than double that of the top six states.

California already holds the title of highest poverty rate, largest homeless population, and most people fleeing for more economically-friendly states. Today’s accolade of highest unemployment rate fits right in on the list of titles that belong to California and that no other state wants to have.

Meanwhile, Congressional Democrats are beginning to sweat about their prospects in the Golden State. California has more targeted House races than any other state and will be “pivotal” in determining which party controls the majority in November. Following a strong showing by Republican incumbents and candidates in California’s March 5 primary, political prognosticators are taking notice.

• CA-47 (Open, Democratic): Likely Democratic to Tossup
• CA-49 (Mike Levin, Democratic) Likely Democratic to Leans Democratic
